16th May – On our way to the Solent

Yesterday started off overcast and a few drops of rain and then the sun came out, but next to no wind. What was there was from behind us and may have given us a little push, but the engines were running for the whole day. We couldn’t decide where to go. The first option was Eastbourne as initially we thought the tide was going to be against us getting past Beachy Head, and would make a longer trip for today getting to the Solent. With a closer look at the Almanac and the plotters we realised we would arrive at Beachy Head around slack water. So we carried on to Brighton. It turned out the tide was already running West, so an easy run to Brighton arriving at about 20.00. A decision was made to leave at 05.30 this morning. There’s no wind again and it is a misty grey day. The Vessel Finder tracking of Jeddo seems a bit hit or mis. I can only assume it is that the aerial is mounted on a pole on the push pit, which must reduce the range a bit, combined with high cliffs and more remote areas, I’m probably going to disappear occasionally. It relies on ground stations feeding into the Vessel Finder network. Marine Traffic is better, but doesn’t embed on the website as well and it seems to have a lot of adverts.
