Furling Genoas/Jibs
With most of the boats now ashore, there are still a few with sails on. We would like to remind members that sails can come undone in windy conditions. This not only causes damage to the sails but can cause damage to other boats. In fact one boat came very close to tipping over at the club a couple of years ago in stormy conditions due to its sail coming unfurled. Fortunately it happened during the day when a number of members were at the club who were able to get securing lines on the boat and the sail under control.
Not only do you run the risk of the sail becoming loose and causing damage, but a furled sail will get wet and remain wet and go green or mouldy.
Many yards and marinas will not allow boats to be lifted ashore with sail still in place. Whilst we don’t intend to enforce this as we know how it is extremely difficult to remove sails whilst afloat on swinging moorings.
If you still have sails furled on your boat please safeguard your property and your fellow club members property.
Michael Hegarty
At the last committee meeting, Michael Hegarty tendered his resignation from the committee and the club. He is moving home to Essex, so will be too far from the club.
Most of you will know Michael and enjoyed his soup and BBQ cooking at the work parties, or attended the suppers he has organised at the Tree Tuns over the last few years.
I’m sure you will all join me in wishing Michael well in his new home near his family, and thank him for all he has done for the club.
