2nd August Lowestoft to Harwich

We left Lowestoft at 06.30 to catch the tide South along the coast. Having an even earlier start from Wells the previous morning we decided on a little later departure and then push a bit of tide when nearer to Harwich. We left Lowestoft as the Windfarm Cats were doing there morning runs with the workers out to the Wind Farms. The first couple of miles were very choppy with all the fast traffic.

The weather was grey, but still fairly warm. It wasn’t great for getting pictures, so not very many to show. It felt strange as I visited Lowestoft last year in the boat, so I was back in familiar waters. It could be said I had completed my circumnavigation of Britain when I reached Lowestoft, but the real end will be when we pass Garrison Point and then get back to the club.

We continued South past Southwold, Sizewell Nuclear Power Station, Thorpeness and Aldeburgh. Then past the Atomic weapon testing station at Orford Ness with its test bunkers. Finally the Deben entrance and Felixstowe with its towering container hoists and Container ships. The traffic was fairly light in and out of the docks so we crossed the fairway easily and followed the recommended yacht track into Harwich. We found a spot to anchor at Erwarton West. The sun was out by then and we had a very warm evening sitting in the cockpit on the boat.
