21st July Arbroath to Eyemouth

After our night moored on the wall outside the fish marked we set off about 07.30 with very little water under our keels. We picked our way out through the pot markers and when relatively clear we set our sails. The Westerly breeze was perfect, we were actually sailing, heading on a course SE across the Firth of Forth. The wind picked up a bit and firstly one reef went in and a little later a 2nd. A huge wind farm is under construction about halfway across and once past that the wind dropped and the speed dropped pushing back our arrival time, the reefs came out, but that didn’t really help so engines back on.

We arrived at Eyemouth that had a sudden influx of visiting yachts that day, not helped by the expected arrival of a 60ft Training Ship. A section of pontoon was reserved to get the training ship in. The rest of us ended up rafted 2 or 3 deep along the pontoon. Ironically when the harbour master had gone home, a fishing boat took advantage of the nice big empty space and moored up for the night. The training ship arrived and ended up against the harbour wall in part of the commercial harbour. When we left in the morning it was dried out leaning against the wall. The day before we arrived had been carnival day and all the bunting and flags were still flying.

There were some huge grey seals that were use to being fed scraps from the fishing boats or from the stall that sold mackerel to the tourists to feed to the seals.
