20th July Stonehaven to Arbroath

After the very uncomfortable ride to Stonehaven we expected much of the same moving on to Arbroath. The breeze was SW again, dead on the nose, but a bit lighter and the sea was calmer. We made good progress, initially getting a different view of the War memorial and Donnottar Castle.
We continued along the coast that was fairly uninteresting to Arbroath. Arbroath has to be the most congested areas for pot markers, even in the harbour approach. I was approaching the harbour slowly avoiding the markers when I realise one had a huge length of floating rope trailing from it right in my path. I had nowhere to go so dropped into reverse and managed to stop and reverse away from it. We were directed into the inner harbour by the harbour master and moored up. Arbroath has an inner harbour with a gate which wouldn’t be opening until the tide was high enough around 11.30 on Sunday. This wasn’t ideal with our planned trip across the Firth of Forth to Eyemouth. The harbour master allowed us to move to the outer harbour wall outside the fish market provided we left early. We had a mooch around the town that had more shops surviving than some other places we have visited. The ruins of the old abbey was closed when we were there, but looked very interesting.
