18th -19th July Peterhead to Stonehaven

We set off from Peterhead with a favourable tide, but yet again a Southerly breeze dead on the nose. The wind against tide built the sea into a very uncomfortable short chop that neither boat coped well with. Progress was very slow. What started as a sunny morning, the clouds came over and when we passed Aberdeen it looked extremely grey. It’s known a Granite City and it certainly looked it.

A little later the tide changed and although against us the sea calmed and we were able to make better progress, eventually arriving about 20.00 and moored up against the harbour wall. Once in the harbour it felt as though summer must have eventually arrived in Scotland. We didnt need coats on in the evening.

Arriving late we decided we would stay an extra night and see a bit of Stonehaven. The morning was taken up with getting fuel for the boats, going to the Co-op to restock the fridge and then doing some laundry. During the afternoon we walked to the nearby War memorial and Donnattar Castle. It was a bit of tourist hotspot, but once we had negotiated the long staircase down to the entrance it was well worth the frustration of people in front very slowly ascending the stairs.

    Hi David,
I have been watching golf today, it’s the British Open and takes place directly opposite on the West Coast. I can tell you, the weather has been atrocious although you had probably experienced similar when coming over to meet us at Ullapool.
    The caste looks great.
All the best for the next phase…

Hi Barry, the weather was pretty good today on the East Coast. Warm and sunny for most of the day. Rain now but still warm unlike what we have experienced up until now. It was certainly a miserable day and the wettest part of the trip so far getting to Ullapool and as you know when moored up. Back in England in the next couple of days.
